American Civil War

Between 1985 and 1990, Ken and Ric Burns produced for television a ten-hour documentary film series on the American Civil War. In a related project they worked with Geoffrey C. Ward to produce a companion book of “some of the most eloquent, compelling, amusing, curious, and beautiful images of the war.” [1, p. xvii] Below are some examples of those images; somewhat arbitrarily I have preferred photographs of persons, often anonymous, rather than of places.
