Paddle Steamer Rivals

For a brief period during 1895 and 1896 two side wheel steamers competed with each other for business between Digby, NS, and Saint John, NB. SS City of Monticello was owned by the Bay of Fundy Steamship Company and, beginning in 1891, provided four return trips weekly between the two cities. In July 1895 SS Prince Rupert, which was built expressly for the newly created Dominion Atlantic Railway, began to provide two return trips daily between Digby and Saint John. Since the Prince Rupert clearly provided the better service, in 1896 the Monticello was reassigned to run between Digby and Boston. Finally in 1899 she joined the fleet of Loran Ellis Baker’s Yarmouth Steamship Company.

This album features images of the side wheel steamers City of Monticello and Prince Rupert. I am indebted to archivist Jamie Serran, at the Yarmouth County Museum and Archives, for providing access to photographs of the Monticello.
